Hamburg’s “Magistralen”, the dominant roads that simultaneously connect and divide the city, are set to change significantly. Whilst wider investigations have been made at an urban level, this semester we will be looking at the architectural scale and interrogating the relationship of the individual building to the Magistralen and the public realm. Our projects will propose a “House for Artists”, where they can both live and work, as well as acting as a cultural hub that brings together the surrounding community. The proposals will contribute significantly to the wider placemaking of the Magistralen transforming the current thoroughfare from a place of passing to a place of being. The building should experiment with and pioneer new, creative and flexible forms of living and community life. In Hamburg, we will meet with leaders of the art and urban design scene and explore changing urban conditions. On our trip to London, we will investigate innovative urban, cultural and living spaces, visit exciting architectural offices and examine current British architectural thinking.
